DOCUMENTARY FILMMAKER & 1ST ASSISTANT CAMERA

JULIA NACARIO (they/siya, she) is a Bay Area based and Cebuano filmmaker invested in the cultural revitalization of Pilipinx communities.

They were accepted by Queer Women of Color Media Arts Project - QWOCMAP as a Film and Freedom Academy fellow in 2023 and continues to work in film spaces across the East Coast and Bay Area as a director, producer, and 1st assistant camera since 2018. Her first documentary short, “PAINTED ONES” won Best Documentary at London International Film Festival and was a finalist for CAAMFEST’s Loni Ding Award in 2025. Her work has been showcased at the Asian American Showcase, CAAMFest, DisOrient Asian American Film Festival, Diwa Filipino Film Festival Showcase, HAAPIFEST, the International Queer Women of Color Film Festival, San Francisco Frozen Film Festival, and Queer East in London, UK. In addition to directing and helping productions, they are currently training under a Netflix-sponsored Audio Description apprenticeship with Descriptive Video Works (DVW) to become a professional audio describer for film, television, and new media.

Julia was born and raised in San Francisco, CA. They graduated from Wesleyan University where they received their BA in Cognitive Psychology and Minor in Film Studies from the College of Film and the Moving Image in 2022. Outside of film festival coordination and programming, Julia enjoys kickboxing and studying Filipino martial arts.
